History

Having previously worked for a large consulting engineering firm, Don L. Carter, P.E. and Tom H. Sloope, P.E. felt that something was vitally missing for communities seeking engineering services in Middle and South Georgia. With this in mind, on March 19, 1990, both principals joined together in forming the consulting engineering firm of Carter & Sloope, Inc., with the heart and core values resting on the idea of providing “personal” consulting engineering services for communities across Georgia.

In December of 1991 the firm acquired a new partner, Mark C. Gatlin, P.E., whose broad experience in water and wastewater treatment strengthened the firm’s overall technical expertise and helped to readily establish Carter & Sloope, Inc. as a full service-engineering firm for municipalities.

As of April 1996, Carter & Sloope, Inc. had set up its main office in Macon, Georgia. In 1997 the first branch office was established in Valdosta, Georgia, allowing Carter & Sloope to provide engineering design and construction administration services to clients throughout South Georgia. Expanding rapidly, in late 1999 and early 2000 two new branch offices opened to accommodate clients. The Athens, Georgia office provides engineering related services to north and northeast Georgia, and in addition, the Savannah office was established to service clients along the coast and southern South Carolina.

Though founded with basic service lines in civil and environmental engineering, the firm continues to diversify and also offer expertise in marine structures, bulkheads, bridges, building structures, surveying, construction administration, site design and landscape architecture. Currently, Carter & Sloope maintains a staff of 57, comprised of professional engineers, project engineers, technicians, clerical and survey crewmembers.
